…a $25 gift card to Bookshop.org, an online book store that supports local brick-and-mortar bookstores!
I am extremely excited to have reached 500 subscribers here at Something Funny, Something True. Technically, as of today I have reached 505, but one of those is me with a different email address so I can keep tabs on how my emails look to The General Populace, so really there are 504 of you. Perhaps 503, after the inevitable unsubscribe that happens every time I send out an email. (Sorry to see you go. Was there too much Jane Austen? Do you mind filling out a brief exit interview?)
IN ANY CASE, I have hit a very big milestone (for me at least) and I wanted to celebrate by giving something away, and I have actually delayed for a couple of weeks in announcing this because I couldn’t think WHAT I would give away. I knew I wanted it to be bookish-themed, and I thought of making up a little Jane-Austen-themed surprise package, but not everybody who reads this Substack is here for Austen content and I didn’t want to alienate any kind readers. So I kept thinking and kept thinking, and wondering if I should just choose a random favorite book to send to a lucky winner (in keeping with the general literary theme, you know) but then what if they didn’t like that genre, or already had that book? Should I take suggestions for a book prize? Should I offer several options? Should I give carte blanche and tell the winner they can select anything they like from Amazon and I’ll buy it for them? What if they choose an ineffably expensive gold-embossed first folio of Shakespeare (if such a thing indeed exists for purchase on the Web)? Also, what if my readers don’t want to share their mailing address with me? What if the winner turns out to be a weirdo (not you who are reading this, of course) and I don’t want to share my return-mailing address with THEM?
Then I remembered that it is 2024, and digital gift cards exist.
I’m gonna chalk that one up to common or garden-variety sleep deprivation.
So here we are. Thank you for reading this and being one of the 500. I appreciate you more than you know. Some of you have joined more recently, and some of you have been here from the very beginning. I am grateful for you all. I can’t wait to get to know you better.
With this in mind, I am opening up my giveaway to anyone who is a subscriber to this Substack. You can be a long-time reader or someone who only just found out about me. I hope you will be honorable about this and not just enter the giveaway in hopes of winning a gift card, only to vamoose into the sunset, or wherever dishonorable people vamoose to, and use the gift card to buy a box set of Twilight and never read any of my posts ever again.
But I know you wouldn’t do that.
Anyway, here you go. You can do multiple things to enter! You cannot win if you live in my household! (Sorry, Rob. I love you) You must be a reader of Something Funny, Something True! And… you must be the kind of person who gets excited about possibly getting a FREE BOOK, because if you are that kind of person, then Something Funny, Something True is the sort of thing that I think you will like.
Here is where you can enter, and read the rules and parameters, and all that jazz.

I tried to do a fancy embed but I’m a writer, not a coder or even a techie person and I couldn’t figure out how to put the html code in the Substack rich text editor so you’ll just have to click on the link. I promise it’s not a scam, just an external website that hosts giveaways for people who aren’t good with tech.
Thanks for reading. I really mean that.
Love,
Amy
EDIT — Thank you so much to all who entered and congratulations to Alexandra Rovirosa, who won!
What if the winner turns out to be a weirdo 😂
Congrats on the 500 subscribers, Amy - that is amazing!
